Pros and Cons of Solar Power

Let’s talk about the pros and cons of solar energy.

We’ve installed solar power all over Tauranga and beyond, we know our stuff and we thought we’d help you decide if a home solar system is right for you. It’s a big decision and it depends on your why. Are you wanting to kick some financial goals long term? Or, are you looking to minimise your carbon footprint for a greener future? Maybe it’s a bit of both.

We tailor your solar system to your home and lifestyle. Let’s dive into the pros and cons of solar system ownership.

The Pros of Solar Power

A Renewable, Sustainable Energy Source

Solar power is a fantastic way to harness renewable energy – especially in one of the sunniest regions in New Zealand. Bay of Plenty recorded the third highest sunshine hours last year (pipped by Taranaki and Nelson) and solar is a great way to harness thousands of sunshine hours per year for a greener energy source.

Cheaper (or Even Free) Power

Installing a solar system can dramatically reduce your energy bills. With solar, you could find yourself saving enough to fund a European getaway or indulge in daily coffees without the guilt. At the very least, the savings you make in your power bill usually offset the cost of installing the system if you’re taking advantage of your bank’s green energy low interest loans.

Energy Independence

Solar power gives you the freedom to break away from the grid, creating complete independence from energy companies. Solar batteries store your power made during the day so you can use it whenever you like. Without a battery it’s best to stay connected to the main grid in case you run out of solar power.

If you’re home during the day, live alone or do things like washing or running the dishwasher during the day, you might not need a battery to store excess power and can still gain the independence you’re seeking. We’ll discuss your specific needs before we advise on whether a battery is right for you.

Earn Credits or Sell Excess Power

Not only can a solar system power your home, but any excess can be sold back to the grid.  You can also earn credits if you’re still connected to the main grid but use less power than estimated. It’s a win-win, turning your roof into a mini power station that earns its keep (or at least a free coffee for the month).

Boost Your Home’s Value

Solar panels could increase the value of your home, savvy buyers will appreciate the energy saving potential, and the sustainability factor of their new home.

Power your Holiday Home

Have you got a bach with expensive energy costs creeping up? When you install solar at home, you can connect your solar setup to your main home and your holiday spot, making them both more energy-efficient. When you’re not at the bach, energy created from solar panels can be stored in your main home’s battery to use there, and any excess energy you have saved up at home can be used on holiday at the bach. How clever is that!

Keep the lights on during a power cut.

A lot of our rural clients install home solar systems to ensure they’ve still got power during a power outage. If you live rurally, you’ll know these can be pretty frequent, and a back up solar system saves a lot of hassle for rural homes.

The Cons of Solar Power

There are two sides to every coin and we’re an honest bunch. Before you install a solar system with us we want to ensure you have the whole story. It is an investment that requires thought after all. We don’t think there is a downside to having solar, but we do think you should have all the facts when considering a long-term investment in your home.

Initial Set Up Costs

The cost of solar panels is an investment.  If you’re planning to move homes soon, it might be best to wait until you’re set up in your new home as the new owners will reap the benefits of your investment.

If you’re a low energy user, we can calculate in-house if investing in solar is right for you. However, sometimes cost isn’t a motivator and some of our clients are simply passionate about reducing their carbon footprint for future generations, even if they are low energy users. There are options to suit everyone and we’ll talk you through these.

Weather Dependency

Solar power is (obviously) heavily reliant on sunshine hours and your energy output can fluctuate depending on the weather. Generally in the Bay of Plenty and in most of New Zealand we are lucky enough to have plenty of hours (even cloudy days will still generate power) to make solar power a viable, sustainable energy option.

Potential Maintenance Costs

Solar panels require regular cleaning and occasional maintenance. Like any part of your home, once you install your solar panels, you’ll have to take care of them to ensure they last. Maintenance costs for solar panels are pretty low and they’re easy to clean once a year, or seasonally to clear any debris or build up, but it’s good to be aware they require ongoing, light maintenance.

Solar power is a great option for a more sustainable home with the added bonus of cheaper energy bills. Many of our team members have solar installed at home, and love it. There are things to consider about your home and lifestyle needs and we can chat you through the options at our initial consult.

We have technology in-house that can accurately predict how solar will help you meet your financial or carbon savings goals.

We’re always happy to chat, give us a call to talk about solar at your place.
